Established in 1668, Merck is proud to be one of the oldest and largest pharmaceutical and chemical companies in the world. While the company’s roots are firmly grounded in Darmstadt, Germany, Merck has branches in approximately 70 countries around the globe, employing around 50,000 people.
After being represented in South Africa for over 100 years, Merck (Pty) Ltd South Africa became registered as an entity in its own right 45 years ago. Today, the local head office in Modderfontein, Johannesburg, takes care of the sales and distribution of Merck’s broad range of pharmaceutical, consumer health, performance materials and life science products across Africa, as well as providing the relevant technical support.
Merck’s new brand identity, launched in October 2015, reflects Merck’s transformation into a global science and technology company and focuses on innovative, technology-driven businesses as well as the modernisation and expansion of Merck’s global headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. Merck’s new image is based on the concept of a vibrant science and technology company, and is inspired by the colourful and multifaceted shapes seen under a microscope. The new design features bold and expressive colours and shapes with a scientific look-and-feel. These are also reflected by the new company logo. In comparison with the former logo, the new logo makes for a bold statement.
In 2018, Merck will celebrate 350 years. What an accomplishment for a company still maintained by the original founding family.
